My breeder is using a set-up that I find pretty interesting! She has a shallow plastic tray she sets the potty pads in the bottom, then sprinkles wood pellets over the top so the texture / smell is more earthy like something you'd find outside, and nothing like indoor surfaces. especially during initial potty training.

Right now we have a dog door to our small back yard, so I don't fret much -but considering we're getting a puppy soon I don't want to give her full access to outside while we're gone until she is bigger, but also don't want her to use potty pads because I feel like that could be potentially confusing with the other soft surfaces like carpets, rugs, blankets, etc. I've been thinking about this exact thing It'd be nice to have the option of an acceptable indoor potty spot occasionally in case of long departures / emergencies. I will ask friends to come and let him out if I'm away too long, but wondering if this is trainable. He hasn't had an accident since November (an overnight poop), but I haven't left him for long. My question is, in the event he must potty when I'm gone, is there a way to train him to use a pee pad I can leave for him somewhere? I'm not as concerned about poo as it it easily collected without soaking into things. He's held it from 7pm until 2pm next day when he didn't have to. He does usually go before bed around 11pm, but not always. For example he never needs to go in the morning, usually not until noon or later (usually by 2pm though). He's really good at holding it when it's not necessary. For example, tomorrow I'm leaving at 8am and will be back around 2pm. I'm going to have times when I have to leave Elroy home alone for extended periods. Don't get me wrong, I don't intend for this to be necessary, but if there is something I can train regarding it, he wouldn't have to hold it as long.
